In recent months this has
become the most popular item at HomePhoneWiring.com!
The ADSL2+ /
VDSL2 Splitter is compatible with ADSL, but has improved
filtering for the entire 20kHz-30MHz frequency range for
ADSL2+ or VDSL2 used for Video over DSL applications such as
IPTV (Internet Protocol Television). Whether your current
plans are just for ADSL for internet access or you are
planning to use VDSL2 immediately, this is the splitter you
should select. Even if you're only using ADSL now, it has
become increasingly likely that you will have the option to
switch to higher speed VDSL2 service in the future, so it
makes sense to select this splitter so that you will be
prepared to upgrade your service without having to change the
splitter.
The ADSL2+ / VDSL2 Splitter is offered here in two models.
Both models have RJ-11 jacks for the LINE and PHONE
connections. The PS-36i-01 (pictured at left) has an 6P2C
(RJ-11) jack for the MODEM connection and IDC connectors
parallel to all three jacks to allow easy tool-less direct
termination of unstripped wires as an alternative to using
the jacks. The PS-36-02 (pictured at right) has an 8P2C jack
(often referred to as RJ-45) for the MODEM connection and
parallel screw terminals which can be used instead of the
modular jacks. (A cord with either a 6P2C/RJ-11 or
8P2C/RJ-45 plug can be used in the 8P2C modem jack of the
model PS-36-02, making it preferable for use in most
"structured media center" wiring cabinets.) The PS-36-02 is
listed on Wilcom's site and in their specification documents
as just "PS-36", but I use the "PS-36-02" designation here
for clarity about the specific model being
referenced/ordered.
The small size of the PS-36 housing (0.9" H x 3.0" W x 2.0"
D) makes it ideal for mounting next to a wiring block or
inside a residential "media center". Holes at the top and
bottom make it easy to mount almost anywhere with two
screws.
It is a "whole-house" splitter and not simply a fancy
microfilter.
This splitter can be used for DSL wiring installation
configurations discussed on pages An Overview of Wiring Requirements to Support
Residential DSL Service, DSL Splitter Installation in a Star Topology,
Installing the DSL
Splitter Near the DSL Modem/Router, and Installing A DSL Splitter
With An Alarm System.
Note: You should definitely NOT attempt to insert multiple
wires in the IDC terminals of the PS-36i-01; that will not
work. The screw terminals on the PS-36-02 are intended for
the connection of a single wire. They may have space to
accommodate two or three wires, but that is not recommended.
If you have multiple voice cables that you need to connect
to this splitter, you'll need some type of junction device, such as a block,
junction box, or screw terminal.

For several years this was
the most popular item at HomePhoneWiring.com!
Because the
objective of this site is to help people save money by doing
their own telephone and DSL wiring in the smartest way
possible, I am recommending that you select the ADSL2+ /
VDSL2 Splitter offered above instead of this indoor ADSL2+
splitter, even though the initial cost will be a little
higher. It simply makes sense to prepare for upgrade to VDSL2
when installing a splitter, even if you are currently using
ADSL. However, for now I will continue to offer this splitter
for those customers who are relatively sure they would never
upgrade their service.
Indoor DSL Splitter includes three RJ-11 jacks (LINE,
MODEM, PHONE). It also has parallel screw terminals which
can be used instead of the modular jacks.
The housing of the PS-15 is basically the same as the Indoor
ADSL2+ / VDSL2 Splitter offered above and is the same size
(0.9" H x 3.0" W x 2.0" D) with mounting holes at the top and
bottom.
Note: The screw terminals on this splitter are intended for
the connection of a single pair. If you have multiple voice
cables that you need to connect to this splitter, you'll need
some type of junction device,
such as a block, junction box, or screw terminal.

To offer an ADSL2+ /
VDSL2 Splitter that can be installed by a consumer without
violating telco rules prohibiting customers from mounting a
splitter inside the NID housing, I have combined the Wilcom
PS-32, which is an ADSL2+ / VDSL2 NID Splitter similar to the
PS-36, with a TII 160GS housing, to create a self contained
Outdoor ADSL2+ / VDSL2 Splitter that can be mounted outdoors
right next to the NID!
The Outdoor ADSL2+ / VDSL2 Splitter has the same
improved 20kHz-30MHz frequency range filtering
characteristics as the PS-36 Indoor
ADSL2+ / VDSL2 Splitter. It is therefore and ideal choice
even if you are only using it for ADSL, because it will allow
you to upgrade your service to VDSL2 in the future without
changing your splitter.
The weather resistant TII 160GS enclosure used for the
Outdoor ADSL2+ / VDSL2 Splitter is only 4.29"H x 3.26"W x
2.06"D. That's about 2/3 the size of the Large Outdoor DSL
Splitter offered below, so it fits in a lot smaller space! It
can be mounted with screws on an exterior wall adjacent to
the NID.
The PS-32 splitter unit in the Outdoor ADSL2+ / VDSL2
Splitter has screw terminals for each of the three splitter
signal pairs.
This is the ideal whole-house splitter for most ADSL2+ /
VDSL2 installations requiring exterior installation near the
NID. Since the PS-32 voice terminals only accommodate one
pair, if you currently have more than one voice cable
connected to the NID, you will need to consolidate those
cables on a separate junction
device and use one cable to connect from there to the
splitter voice terminals. The TII 163-01 enclosure is an
ideal junction device for this purpose, as it is an identical
match to the exterior of the TII 160GS housing.
This splitters can be used for DSL wiring installation
configurations discussed on pages An Overview of Wiring Requirements to Support
Residential DSL Service, Installing the DSL Splitter Near the NID, and
DSL Splitter
Installation in a Star Topology, and Installing A DSL Splitter
With An Alarm System.

People living in areas
with a lot of lightning storms requested a way to provide
additional surge protection for the equipment on their DSL
service. My solution is combining a Wilcom PS-32 ADSL2+ /
VDSL2 NID Splitter with a TII 349-1MG Protector.
The Outdoor ADSL2+ / VDSL2 Splitter with
Additional Surge Protection has the same improved 20kHz-30MHz
frequency range filtering characteristics as the PS-36 Indoor ADSL2+ / VDSL2 Splitter. It
also has a weather resistant TII 160GS exterior enclosure
like the Outdoor ADSL2+ / VDSL2
Splitter.
The telco NID should provide protection from surges, but
experience indicates that is not always the case. Some folks
would rather be safe than sorry and have additional surge
protection for the expensive equipment connected to their DSL
service. This splitter/protector combination is the ideal
answer for that requirement. The enclosure for this splitter
contains a heavy duty protector module that consists of a
three-electrode gas tube surge arrester, a failshort
mechanism, and a backup airgap. This is the same type device
phone companies use for surge protection.
Take a look at the lightning density map at http://www.lightningsafety.com/nlsi_info/lightningmaps/US_FD_Lightning.pdf.
The map legend is marked in strikes per
year per square kilometer.

The purple areas on the map
(Tampa, Florida) average less than 820 feet between likely
strike locations!
If you live in any area that is purple or red
on this map, you should give serious consideration to using
this splitter/protector combination. That includes almost
everybody who lives in Florida! It's also probably a good
choice if you live in an area that is orange on this map.
This splitter can be used for DSL wiring installation
configurations discussed on pages An Overview of Wiring Requirements to Support
Residential DSL Service, Installing the DSL Splitter Near the NID, and
DSL Splitter
Installation in a Star Topology, and Installing A DSL Splitter
With An Alarm System.
The incoming DSL service is connected to the threaded posts
on the protector module and secured with nuts. Inside
wiring is connected to the "PHONE" and "ATU-R" (DSL modem)
screw terminals on the PS-32 Splitter unit. To provide surge
protection, the ground stud must be connected to a verified
ground, such as a ground rod or metallic water service entry
pipe.
Note: If you have multiple voice cables, you'll need some
type of junction device to
consolidate those cables and provide a single pair connection
to the splitter's voice terminals. The TII 163-01 enclosure is an
ideal junction device for this purpose, as it is an identical
match to the exterior of the TII 160GS housing.
