If you're going to do your own
phone wiring on 66 or 110 blocks, you need a punchdown tool.
There is no other correct way to connect wire on blocks than
with a proper punchdown tool. A punchdown tool is also used
to connect wires on 110 IDC jacks and patch panels. This
Paladin 3571 has a combo blade with both 66 and 110 cut
(a.k.a. punch and cut) ends. It has HI/LO setting for the
impact spring compression. The grip is rubber cushioned - a
fact you'll appreciate before you finish punching all the
cables and cross-connects on just one 66 or 110 block.
Note that the 66/110 combo blade can't be used for installing
"daisy chain" cross-connect jumpers, which requires a blade
with a non-cut (punch only) end. If you need to install
"daisy chain" jumpers, either add a cut/non-cut blade for
your block type or select one of the other punchdown tools
below with cut/non-cut blades.
This tool accepts standard twist-lock blades. Don't be
fooled by less expensive tools that use "screw on" or
"push-in" blades that are not the industry standard. Those
blades might be difficult to locate when you need a
replacement. The few extra dollars for a tool that accepts
standard blades is money well spent.
One spare blade can be stored in back of the handle.
Sorry, punchdown tools can't be returned for a refund. If
you don't want to keep a punchdown tool after you finish your
installation, consider renting instead
of buying a new one.

These tools are the same punchdown tool
handle as the tool above, but with blades that have cut and
non-cut ends.
If you will only be using one type of block, you should
choose either the PDT-110 or PDT-66. If you will be using
both 66 and 110 blocks and want the capability to install
"daisy chain" jumpers, select the PDT-Dual with both 66 and
110 blades.
Sorry, punchdown tools can't be returned for a refund. If
you don't want to keep a punchdown tool after you finish your

A nylon "holster" that hangs on your
belt is the perfect way to carry your 66 or 110
punchdown tool and keep it handy while you're working
on your wiring project. Storing your punchdown tool in
this handy holster also helps protect the blade and
keep it sharp. (Punchdown tool sold separately
above.)

Non-impact Punchdown Tools
|
|
These tools are intended for low volume
termination of wires on jacks and patch panels. These are a
good choice if you already have an existing block and just
need to change the occasionals cross-connect jumper or if you
will only be terminating a few jacks. They have a
"comfortable" rubber handle grip handle that fits in the palm
of your hand, but I don't really recommend trying to use one
of these for terminating an entire block of cables. The user
must provide all of the force required to punch, seat, and
cut the wires - more work than you'd think. If you are
terminating an entire block, the spring force provided by an
impact tool like those sold above makes the job much easier.
The blade on these tools are fixed in the handle and are cut
only (punch and cut). They are not suitable for installing
"daisy chain" jumpers on blocks, which requires a non-cut
(punch only) blade. Sorry, punchdown tools can't be
returned for a refund.

A multi-pair punchdown tool is the preferred
method of installing station cables and seating the
"c clips" on a 110 block. If you have a
continuing need to install 110 blocks, you should purchase
one of these. Sorry, multi-pair punchdown tools can't be
returned for a refund. If you don't want to purchase one,
consider renting
one.
A multi-pair punchdown tool has a reversible blade to
terminate wires on the block with or without cutting the
wires. It can terminate and cuts up to five pairs on a 110
block at the same time with one punch motion! It is also used
to seat the 110 "c clip" connecting blocks
onto the 110 block base.

Paladin Muti-function Utility
Tools
|
|
As a phone tech, I think these are the
neatest multi-function utility tools on the market. They are
a fold up pocket tool that includes a long nose plier and an
assortment of knife and utility blades. They are built for
Paladin by SOG, known as a maker of high quality
mutlti-function tools. The neat thing is that the Paladin
tools are designed especially for telephone installation
work. They have non-impact punchdown blades that fold out
and lock in place, just like the other blades. The PT-525
has both 66 and 110 blades, a 1/4" hex drive, and other
blades chosen to to make it idealfor both telephone
installation work and general utility, plus covers that fold
over the open tool sides to make it much more comfortable to
use. The PT-510 has a 110 blade and a nice assortment of
general utility blades. Both tools include a leather holster
so you can keep them handy on your belt. Paladin has a great
site that provides a lot more information about these great
tools. For more details, go to http://www.powerplaytools.com/

This tool is handy for making nice neat cuts
around the sheath of 4-pair cable like the CAT5E CMX offered
here without damaging the insulation of the wires inside. It
also has a 110 punch head that is suitable for limited use
terminating wires on IDC jacks and placing jumpers on 110
blocks when a standard punchdown tool is not readily
available.
Note: The 110 punch head on this tool does not cut wires when
they are punched down. The "tails" of wires that are too
long must be carefully cut with scissors or some other tool
to avoid the wire pulling loose from its termination. This
tool is not strong enough for seating clips on a 110 block or
for continuous use for terminating a lot of jacks or
cross-connect jumpers. It should not be considered as a
replacement for a standard punchdown tool with a 110
blade.
